Once you learn these 10 lessons from Mark Twain, you’ll live a kick-ass life

You may know Mark Twain for his popular books or witty quotes. He was a writer and also a humorist, satirist and lecturer. Here a few of my favourite tips from him that will help you live a kick-ass life.

1) Just Be Yourself

When we spend time looking to others for approval, we rob ourselves our of own approval in the process. If we decide that we are good enough for ourselves, we’ll be good enough for the world.

2) Don’t limit yourself to what you think you are

If you tell yourself you can, you will. If you tell yourself, you can’t, you won’t. We trick ourselves into believing a lot of negative things about ourselves, but imagine the possibilities if you trick ourselves into thinking positive things about ourselves!

3) Laughter makes life better

Laughter is the best medicine is still a common belief amongst people all over the world, and for good reason. When we laugh, we can let go, look forward and relax about things.


4) Let it go

When you realize that being angry about things or at people only hurts you, you will start to see things differently and feel differently about your life. You realize you don’t want to spend your precious years on earth mad at things.

5) Remember you are not entitled to anything

Entitlement is a real problem for human beings, but the more you realize that you have to work for what you want, the happier you will be in the pursuits of your life.

6) People don’t like change

People don’t like it when other people change. If you are working on being a better person, be prepared for people to speak out about it. Sometimes getting away from people’s reactions is the hardest part of trying to change.

7) Keep your eye on the prize

When you decide to try to change your life, you are going to be met with a lot of resistance from people, processes and yourself. Don’t let anything get in the way of you trying to make your life what you want it to be. Don’t get distracted by things that aren’t as important to you. Stick with it.

8) Focus on others to make yourself feel good

When you are feeling like things aren’t going your way, turn that frown upside down by focusing your energy on someone else. Help a friend with a problem they are having, mow the neighbour’s lawn, take your sister out for dinner. Do something to make others feel good. It will make you feel good too.

10) Do what you want to do

If you want to travel the world, find a way to do it. If you want to start a business, make time to plan for it. Life is best when it is lived. And living means messing up and failing sometimes. That’s okay. You’ll be glad you tried.
