In 2010, three researchers gave a name to a problem their own field had been quietly ignoring for decades. They called it WEIRD, short for Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, and Democratic, and they used it to describe the kind of person whose responses had been standing in for “human nature” in most of psychology’s foundational research.
I learned the actual scale of it recently, and it’s more extreme than the acronym alone suggests. That slice of humanity supplies about 96 percent of participants in psychology studies, while making up roughly 12 percent of the world’s population.
I happen to belong to that 12 percent, technically. I’m also a psychology researcher working outside the WEIRD center of the field, which puts me in an odd spot: trained inside a discipline built largely on one kind of person, while doing research on people the discipline mostly left out.
What the term actually describes
The acronym comes from a paper by Joseph Henrich, Steven Heine, and Ara Norenzayan, and it wasn’t meant as an insult. It was a description of sampling.
Undergraduates at Western universities are cheap, available, and used constantly in psychology experiments, so a huge share of what we call “findings about human cognition” are actually findings about a fairly narrow, historically unusual group. The paper reviewed research on visual perception, fairness, cooperation, spatial reasoning, moral judgment, and self-concept, and in area after area, WEIRD participants turned out to be statistical outliers, not representative humans.
That’s the part that doesn’t always land. It’s not that WEIRD samples are biased in some minor, correctable way. In several domains, they’re the least typical population you could have picked to represent everyone else.
Why this became a problem instead of a footnote
Sampling limitations exist in every field. What made this one different is scale, and how invisible it was for so long.
Psychology built entire theories of moral reasoning, self-perception, and fairness on the assumption that findings would generalize. Textbooks presented results as facts about “people” rather than facts about a specific, historically unusual subset of people. The gap between the sample and the claim wasn’t hidden exactly, it just wasn’t examined very closely, because almost everyone doing the examining came from inside the same slice.
Georgia isn’t a place psychology usually thinks about, which is part of what actually surprised me when I got into this work. I’ve spent time doing scale adaptation and validation research, including translating and testing tools like the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire in Georgian. Doing that work makes the WEIRD gap concrete rather than abstract. A question that reads as neutral in English can carry different assumptions once it’s translated, about family, emotion, independence, even about what counts as a normal way to answer a question from a researcher.
Where the common response falls short
The easy reaction to this finding is to treat it as a scandal that’s already been fixed, science corrected itself, the field knows now, we’ve moved on. That’s not quite accurate.
Later analyses of psychology journals found the pattern had barely moved in the years since, with WEIRD samples still dominating the field’s top publications almost as heavily as before. Awareness of the problem and correction of the problem turned out to be two different things, separated by incentives that are hard to change quickly: funding structures, university locations, publishing pressure, and the sheer convenience of a participant pool that’s already sitting in a lecture hall.
It’s also worth resisting a different oversimplification, the idea that WEIRD findings are simply wrong and non-WEIRD findings are simply right. That’s not the claim. The claim is narrower and more useful: findings from any single population, WEIRD or otherwise, shouldn’t be assumed to generalize to humans broadly without being tested elsewhere.
The role of context in what gets studied at all
Environment doesn’t just shape the people being studied, it shapes what questions get asked in the first place. A field built mostly around Western, individualist, highly educated participants tends to generate hypotheses that make sense within that framework. Independence, personal choice, self-esteem as an individual trait rather than a relational one.
Move outside that context and some of those questions start to look less universal and more local. Concepts like self-concept, fairness, or even what counts as a “rational” decision shift depending on whether a culture organizes identity around the individual or around the family and community. None of this makes one framework more advanced than another. It means the questions themselves carry cultural assumptions that are easy to miss when almost everyone asking them shares the same assumptions.
This is part of why cross-cultural and translation work matters more than it gets credit for. It’s not just converting words. It’s testing whether the underlying construct behaves the same way once it’s outside its original context.
Where people get this wrong in both directions
Some people take the WEIRD critique and use it to dismiss psychology altogether, as though the entire discipline is now unreliable. That overcorrects. A huge amount of rigorous, careful, cross-culturally tested work exists, and the WEIRD critique itself is a product of psychology doing exactly the kind of self-scrutiny a healthy field should do.
Others go the opposite direction and treat it as settled history, a problem from 2010 that’s since been addressed. Neither position holds up. The more accurate read sits in the uncomfortable middle: the field identified a real, serious limitation, made the limitation known, and has been slow to change the underlying incentives that produced it.

What this means for how findings travel
None of this requires distrust of psychology as a project. It requires a more specific kind of skepticism, one aimed at generalization rather than at the underlying method.
When you see a claim about “how people cooperate” or “how people perceive fairness,” it’s worth a beat of curiosity about who was in the room. Was it a sample of undergraduates in one country, or something closer to a genuinely diverse cross-section of humanity. That single question changes how much weight the claim deserves.
I’ve found this useful in my own work, not as cynicism, but as a kind of discipline. Interesting findings deserve to be taken seriously and tested carefully, not assumed to be universal on the strength of a headline.
Closing reflection
Learning that so much of what got called “human nature” was actually a description of a fairly small, specific, historically recent group of people changes how the research reads, without making it worthless. It makes it partial, the way most research is partial, and worth reading with that in mind.
The 12 percent were never wrong to be studied. The mistake was assuming they could stand in for the other 88.
That’s a modest correction, but it’s the kind that changes how carefully you read everything that follows.
