Women who thrive in their careers usually adopt these 7 daily rituals

I’m not afraid to say it: I think I might be in the golden age of my career.

I’ve just entered my thirties, happily (and gratefully) leaving behind my twenties, and I’ve realized a lot of the things I need to feel happy and fulfilled.

And one of those things is my work as a writer.

A lot of people ask me how I do it, how I manage a self-directed life where I don’t always have set hours, an office space, or even one consistent boss to report into.

And to be honest, I’m not sure I’m doing all that good a job at it! But let me say it: I’ve certainly got a whole lot better.

Over the years, I have become way more disciplined in my approach to my 9-5 (or in my case, a 12-8).

I’ve done this by taking rewarding breaks from work, diversifying my projects, and upskilling in areas that incite my curiosity.

If you’re keen to know what daily rituals I follow to ensure I continue to thrive in my career, read on for some clues!

I’d love to start with one of my favorites: rewarding breaks.

1) They stagger out rewards throughout the day

So many successful women I have spoken to have told me the same thing: you’ve got to reward yourself.

Why? Because in the wise words of L’Oréal Paris—you’re worth it.

This is different for every woman I have approached for mentorship or career advice.

One of them, a seasoned playwright, likes to surround herself with delicious, comforting snack foods. Yummy, right?

Another woman, who is the CFO of a high profile bank, keeps an exercise bike in her office.

See, everyone’s reward will look a little different! Personally, my favorite reward has got to be movies.

I’m a member at my local cinema, so I love to go and write in their member’s lounge.

My reward is seeing the latest release—be it the Barbie movie or an indie. I love it.

So, go on, find what it is that makes you feel good and helps to break up the work day!

2) They get some much-needed fresh air and vitamin D

Some of the most motivated women I know never overlook the simple necessities like stepping out, savoring the sunshine, and soaking in some vitamin D.

To me, this is a must-have in the daily playbook of successful women because nowadays, it can be so damn easy to get lost in the chaos of modern life. (Particularly with the pesky omniscience of technology.)

But you need to ensure those vitamin D levels are met. Why?

Well, it acts as a mood booster, a natural pick-me-up—in other words, it’s a strategic reset.

Plus exposure to a bit of sunlight has a lovely way of lifting your spirits and shaking off the stress of the working day.

3) They have a good stretch

Stretching is another big one. Having a nice old stretch can work wonders in shedding the stiffness, both physical and mental, that inevitably settles into your bones after a day of back-to-back client meetings.

Stretching also boosts blood flow, loosens tight muscles, and sends a much-needed surge of oxygen to the brain.

I find stretching really sets the tone for a day. You can even do it while chanting some of your favorite mantras or meditations, too! This simple act of self-care can offer a major wellbeing boost.

So… what are you waiting for? Join the ranks of other successful career women, and throw those arms wide, pop a lunge, and take a deep breath in.

4) They take a look at their list of goals—both long and short term

There’s no denying that to arrive at a good place in your career, you need a plan of action.

And that’s where goal setting comes in.

These little things keep you focused and on track—so it’s good to check in with them every day.

This doesn’t need to be a huge time suck. Taking just one minute each day to assess goals ensures that successful women stay on course amidst the daily demands of work.

Women thriving in their careers grasp that consistent efforts on seemingly minor tasks lead to wins in the long run.

By doing so, they intentionally shape each work day, aligning their actions with their career aspirations. It’s a daily commitment to building the life they truly want.

5) They pick up their energy in non-caffeine related ways

Who among us doesn’t desperately reach for that caffeine fix? Whether it’s first thing or at 3.30pm, caffeine has become the go-to quick fix for an energy boost.

But here’s a little secret: savvy career women know there are way more ways to boost energy than with a heart-starting double espresso.

This is because it’s about sustained energy that outlasts the caffeine spike.

Imagine kickstarting your day with a listen to your favorite Spotify playlist or a refreshing walk.

Music and movement stimulate the brain, sharpening focus, and enhancing cognitive function.

It’s kind of like giving your mind a daily workout, ensuring it’s in top shape for whatever challenges are waiting for you.

Successful women harness this power to set a positive intention for their day, creating an atmosphere of motivation and confidence—and this can take you anywhere!

6) When it’s time to switch out of work mode, they switch up their outfit

We all need to shake off the day. Why? So we can unwind and be our best selves for the next day. And the day after that.

One way I’ve found a lot of powerful women do this is in the way they transition from the office to their personal lives.

And it all begins with a change of clothes.

This small thing is a symbolic shedding of one’s corporate identity, which works to establish a healthy mental boundary between work and social stuff.

Plus it breaks up the monotony and helps to bring a renewed perspective to the day.

It can always be a simple change, like switching work heels for comfy flats or sneakers.

7) They pamper themselves in small ways

Okay, so hear me out on this one! Pampering isn’t just about having a spa day or jetting off to the Maldives—it can be in the little things too.

And it plays into that little old reward system I was talking about earlier.

High-achieving women tend to follow small yet impactful daily rituals. And this includes a spot of pampering.

This is because they know deeply that self-care is key to preventing burnout.

Like I said, it’s not about extravagance, rather, it’s about creating a sanctuary in the middle of your work day.

You might like to reach for revitalizing face mist—your cue to pause, breathe, and recalibrate—or even the humble scented candle—an aromatic escape from humdrum emails.

These little rituals can really help to maintain balance and a well-nurtured sense of self, which can work wonders when it comes to kicking goals and climbing the corporate ladder.

Final thoughts

Successful career women swear by daily rituals like having a good stretch (which works wonders on tight muscles and a hunched back) as well as boosting their vitamin D levels (essential for a robust immune system and an elevated mood).

As life needs its highpoints, these women tend to sprinkle their journey with rewards—so treat yourself to that hot chocolate or savor a good Netflix episode after tackling that challenging project at work.

Incorporate these into your routine, and watch your career begin to align with your ambitions.
