7 things high achievers never do on the weekend

We all have heard about the importance of habits, but sometimes those habits are doing more harm than we realize.

You might look back on your weekends and struggle to pinpoint why you’re not feeling rested, or why Monday mornings always seem to hit you like a freight train.

How do you know if what you’re doing during your downtime is actually sabotaging your potential for success, or if it’s just the usual weekend routine?

After observing the patterns of high achievers and contrasting them with my own weekend habits, I have curated a list of 7 activities that successful people never do on their days off.

If these ring true for you, it might be time to reconsider how you’re spending your precious free time.

1) They don’t waste their time

We all have the same 24 hours in a day, but how we choose to spend those hours can significantly impact our success. High achievers understand this concept all too well.

You might find yourself aimlessly scrolling through social media or binge-watching the latest Netflix series on your weekends. While there’s nothing wrong with a little downtime, spending entire days on activities that offer no real value could be holding you back.

High achievers, on the other hand, view their weekends as prime time to invest in themselves and their goals. They balance relaxation with activities that contribute to their personal growth and success. This might be reading a book, practicing a hobby, or planning for the week ahead.

If aimless activities are consuming your weekends, it may be time to reconsider how you’re investing your time.

2) They don’t neglect their health

For many, the weekend is a time to indulge – to eat out, sleep in, and perhaps skip the gym. While it’s important to treat yourself occasionally, high achievers understand that a consistent commitment to health is key to maintaining their energy and focus.

You might think that a couple of days off from your workout routine or a weekend filled with unhealthy food won’t make a big difference. But high achievers know that these small choices can accumulate over time, impacting both their physical and mental well-being.

Rather than seeing the weekend as a break from health, successful people use this time to recharge and revitalize. This could mean preparing a healthy meal, going for a run or simply getting enough sleep.

If your weekends are routinely filled with neglect towards your health, it might be time to reevaluate your habits and align them with your goals.

3) They don’t disconnect completely

In our pursuit of work-life balance, we often hear advice about completely disconnecting from work during the weekends. While this concept may be beneficial for some, I’ve found that high achievers don’t always follow this rule.

For instance, I remember a conversation with a successful entrepreneur friend of mine. While talking about our weekend routines, he mentioned that he spends a small part of his Sunday evening reviewing his schedule for the upcoming week. This doesn’t make him feel overworked or stressed; instead, it helps him enter Monday with a clear mind and a defined plan.

High achievers understand the value of their time and the importance of preparation. They might not be working full hours over the weekend, but they don’t completely disconnect either.

If you’re finding your Mondays chaotic and unorganized, perhaps integrating a small aspect of planning or preparation into your weekend could be a game-changer.

4) They don’t ignore their relationships

Investing in relationships is not just about emotional well-being, it can also have tangible benefits on your professional life. According to a Harvard study, strong social relationships have been associated with a 50% increased chance of longevity, which implies a longer and healthier career span.

High achievers understand the importance of maintaining and nurturing their relationships. They know that their success isn’t built solely on individual effort but also on the support and collaboration of others.

During the weekend, they make it a point to spend quality time with their loved ones and friends. They actively engage in social activities that strengthen their connections and create meaningful memories.

If you’re spending your weekends with little to no social interaction, it may be beneficial to start making more space for the people who matter most.

5) They don’t put off self-care

Self-care is a term that’s often thrown around, but its importance cannot be overstated. I learned this lesson the hard way when I was burning the candle at both ends, trying to balance my work and personal commitments. I neglected self-care, and as a result, my productivity and mental health suffered.

High achievers understand that they cannot pour from an empty cup. They prioritize self-care and make sure it’s a non-negotiable part of their weekend routine. This could be anything from a relaxing bath, meditation, yoga, or simply spending time in nature.

After realizing the importance of self-care, I started incorporating it into my weekends. Whether it’s taking a long walk in the park or curling up with a good book, these moments of tranquility have had a profound impact on my overall well-being and productivity.

If you’re constantly caught up in the hustle and bustle without taking time for yourself, consider setting aside some moments for self-care during your weekends.

6) They don’t ignore continuous learning

The path to success is paved with continuous learning and high achievers are well aware of this fact. They understand that growth doesn’t come from complacency, but from constantly challenging oneself and acquiring new knowledge.

During weekends, high achievers often dedicate some time to learning. It could be a new skill, a language, or even diving into a subject that piques their curiosity. They might listen to informative podcasts, watch educational videos, or read books that contribute to their personal or professional growth.

If your weekends are devoid of any learning activities, it might be worthwhile to incorporate some self-education into your routine. After all, knowledge is the most powerful tool we have to create change and achieve our goals.

7) They don’t procrastinate

Procrastination is a pitfall that can significantly hinder progress. High achievers understand this and make a conscious effort to avoid it, even during the weekends.

Instead of pushing tasks off until the last minute, they plan ahead and tackle their responsibilities promptly. This doesn’t mean they’re working round the clock; instead, they manage their time effectively to ensure that important tasks aren’t left until it’s too late.

I’ve personally experienced how procrastination can lead to unnecessary stress and poor performance. Since then, I’ve made it a point to deal with my responsibilities early, leaving me free to enjoy my weekends without any looming tasks.

If procrastination is eating into your weekends and causing you stress, adopting a proactive approach could make a significant difference in your productivity and peace of mind.
