The “steak and eggs diet”: More effective weight control?

There’s a lot of different diets out there. From vegan to fat based, there is no shortage of diets that people want to try. In fact, every other so-called “health expert” have something to recommend!

Even before zero carb and carnivorous diets in recent times, there is an “old-school” diet back in the 1950’s called the “steak and eggs diet”. This particular eating plan was the creation of a bodybuilder and gym owner named Vince Gironda.

Why should you listen to Vince Gironda‘s steak and egg diet? It’s because he was the original bodybuilding rebel.

The first time Arnold Schwarzenegger walked into his gym and announced he was Mr. Universe, Gironda said, “You look like a fat f – – – to me.”

He was rough, rude and obnoxious. But, the fact that Arnold and countless other top bodybuilders put up with his rudeness and actively sought him out speaks a lot about his wisdom and knowledge in the world of bodybuilding.

According to Vince, bodybuilding is 80% diet. Just like any weight loss program, if you don’t have your diet down first, then the rest is moot.’

So what is with this particular diet that it is deemed to be amazingly effective, yet deceptively simple?

Here is an in-depth discussion about steak and eggs diet:

Introduction to the “steak and eggs diet”

The diet in and of itself is pretty simple because the food you are required to eat is only steak and eggs. It is just what it sounds like!

No starches, no fruits, no vegetables — just pure steak and eggs. Two meals a day.

With regards to the time of eating, you don’t eat for the first 8 hours of your day. So if you wake up at 5am, you can’t eat until 1pm. As a side note, it is effectively considered intermittent fasting.

So, there you have it. You have half a pound of steak and 5-6 eggs cooked in butter for lunch and dinner. Then, you have the same for dinner. Rinse and repeat.

How does steak and eggs diet work?

Steak and eggs diet is a virtually zero carb, carnivorous diet. It is a kind of old-school bodybuilding plan which is very high in protein, moderate to high fat, and low in carbohydrate.

If you don’t know, diets that are high in carbohydrates are good for building muscles and bulking up. However, diets low in carbohydrates are generally good for losing weight.

So let’s start with the most basic information. Our bodies have two primary sources of fuel, which are carbohydrates and fat.

When the body is using carbohydrates for energy, it’s called glycolysis. But when it is in a state of using fat for energy, it’s called ketosis. Ketosis is better for losing weight because it doesn’t boost insulin nearly as much as glycolysis.

Insulin is considered a “storage hormone,” and carbohydrates increase it. So when you eat a diet full of carbs, you’ll either store your food as fat or as muscle.

This is why if you want to bulk up, eating carbohydrates is mandatory. When you only eat fats and protein, you don’t boost insulin very much. So it is easier to shred fat, but harder to build muscle. The steak and eggs diet is great for putting your body into a state of ketosis.

Benefits of steak and eggs diet

1. You’ll drop water weight fast

The steak and eggs diet is a no carbohydrate diet. It means you will be consuming a large amount of protein and a decent amount of healthy fats from both your steak and eggs during each meal.

Since carbs are essentially eliminated in this diet, you’ll lose a large amount of water weight within the first week. Additionally, you will look far less bloated with muscle tone becoming more defined.

However, remember that a drop in scale weight within the first week does not equate to “losing fat”. Water molecules bind to carbohydrates and eliminating carbs will result in losing “water weight”.

A body that has a 10% body fat with little to no stored water weight will look leaner than a physique around the 7% body fat mark that is retaining a decent amount of water.

So, if you want to achieve that paper thin skin look then you have to work and drop your water weight.

2. It is very easy to follow

The reason why most people fail to stick to a diet is that they are kind of hard to follow. Dieters fall into a state of paralysis by analysis because there are so many different foods and so many options when it comes to their diet.

Additionally, there is a lot of information about macronutrients and complex tracking of calories. Instead of helping them, the complexity of the program confuses them even more which results in quitting their diet.

Compared to the other diets, the steak and eggs diet leaves no room for confusion. It is fairly easy to follow, no guesswork or procrastination.

Just eat your steak and eat your eggs. There’s no need to boil, mince, chop or steam anything else.

3. It is easy to prepare

Preparation time for this diet is essentially eliminated. There’s no need to spend your Sunday evening chopping vegetables and prepping meat or storming the supermarket shelves for the freshest produce.

When you use Vince Gironda’s old school steak and eggs diet, there are only two ingredients you need to concern yourself with… Steak and Eggs. That’s it.

Both of them are easy to find, cheap depending on the cut of steak you decide upon and extremely quick to prepare.

You just need 1 pan and 5 minutes to prepare, cook and serve it. You can throw your scotch fillets on the cooker for 90 seconds per side, while you allow the steak to settle. After finishing both sides, add the eggs to the pan.

4. It is enjoyable

Who doesn’t like steaks?

You can vary the seasoning and the cooking method for your steak. In fact, there are hundreds of different ways you can do your steak. You just find out what you like and alternate between them.

You can try the recipes for pepper steak seasoning, low calorie barbecue sauce, or steak with butter. The key is to keep it interesting – don’t do the same style or else you will get sick of it.

5. It works

The results you’ll see are the best motivator to keep you on track too, and provided you follow this diet to the tee you will see impressive results in terms of fat loss.

Drawbacks of steak and eggs diet

The first drawback of the steak and eggs diet is that it is not a diet for muscle building.

In order to build muscles, you need to eat a lot of carbs. But this diet is very low in carbs so it is difficult to build muscles. It can still be done but if you’re looking for muscle building diets, this will be hard.

Second, there are no vegetables involved. Even if the hardcore bodybuilders tell you that you don’t need vegetables when you build muscles, they are still incredibly important to your health.

According to MayoClinic, a diet high in vegetables lowers your risk of heart disease, diabetes, and some cancers. It is even correlated with a longer life and a stronger immune system.

Lastly, the steak and eggs diet isn’t sustainable. You cannot just eat steak and eggs for the rest of your life.

Your body needs carbs for certain bodily functions and without carbohydrates, some organs might fail. This diet is recommended as a temporary change to shred fat, but not as a permanent lifestyle change.

In summary:

Compared to a diet consisting of sugary cereals, bread, processed fats and refined, packaged foods, eating steak and eggs is significantly more nutritious.

However, everything is great, but in moderation. Make sure you consult a doctor before you try practicing this diet in the long term.
