If you’re anything like me, you sometimes find it difficult to remember that you’re an incredible person. In fact, I sometimes message my friends to seek reassurance, and they’ve been known to do the same for me.
We need to remember that the fact that we’re even alive is nothing short of miraculous. In fact, the probability of you existing is essentially zero.
But sometimes the incredible fact of our existence isn’t enough and we need a reminder that we’re decent people, which is where today’s article comes in. Here are ten signs that you’re an incredible person, even if you don’t feel that way.
1) People come to you for advice
If people come to you for advice, it’s a pretty good sign that you’ve got your s#*t together. And if you give them advice once and they come back again, it’s a pretty good sign that your advice helped out.
When people come to you and ask for advice, they’re implicitly telling you that you’re an incredible person because they trust you and they want to hear your point of view.
This is especially true if multiple different people come to you for help and advice, because that shows that it’s not just a one-off and that word is spreading amongst your friends.
They all think you’re pretty darn incredible and are hoping that some of your awesomeness is going to rub off on them.
2) You have time for people
When my friends come to me to ask for reassurance, the first thing that I do is remind them that they were there for me when I did the same.
That’s because the first sign that you’re an incredible person is that you make time for people.
If you’re the go-to person in your friend group when someone needs advice or an extra helping hand when they’re moving, it’s a good sign that you’re an incredible person.
Are you making time for people even when you’re busy? And do you care deeply about other people’s feelings? You’re probably an incredible person.
3) You care about issues that don’t directly affect you
As well as caring about other people’s feelings, it’s also a good sign that you’re an incredible person if you care about the issues that affect them.
It’s easy for us to care about the issues that directly affect us, and it’s often these issues that determine the way that we vote in elections or the charities that we donate to. It’s much harder to care about issues that don’t affect us but which affect other people.
4) People call you “woke”
If you care about wider societal issues instead of just focusing on the things that directly affect you, there’s a good chance that someone will call you “woke”.
It’s a controversial term and one that means different things to different people. But in general, I’ve noticed that when someone calls someone else “woke,” it’s usually because the recipient is demonstrating compassion and empathy for other people.
Sticking up for minorities and amplifying the voices of those who are often overlooked is a pretty incredible thing to do, even if it does make you woke. Stick at it.
5) You’re willing to help people (and charities)
We’ve already talked about having time for people, but that was mostly about offering a sympathetic ear and giving them advice when they ask for it. This goes one step further.
If you’re willing to donate your time and effort to help other people, you can rest assured that you’re pretty incredible. They might even tell you!
This is true when you’re helping a friend to move house or you’re picking up their kids from daycare when they have to stay late at work, but it’s even truer when you volunteer for a charity. It’s a pure type of giving that shows the incredible person you are at heart.
6) You have many different skills
Another sign that you’re an incredible person is that you have a lot of different skills and interests. If you find it easy to get passionate about all sorts of different things, you could be one of those incredible souls like Leonardo da Vinci who see the world in a different way.
This is a different kind of incredible that not everyone can aspire to. It’s always nice when people think of you as multi-talented though, especially if you inspire people to take up a new hobby or to learn a new skill.
In my case, I’ve been re-learning German and French on Duolingo, and my 1,000+ day streak has inspired a bunch of my friends to study a language too, including my girlfriend.
7) You have good emotional intelligence and resilience
Two more important skills to have are emotional intelligence and resilience, as these will help you to relate to other people and to provide them with the support that they often need.
It’s all about being able to put yourself inside someone else’s shoes. So if a neighbor complains that your dog is too loud, instead of reacting angrily, consider whether they might have a point. Then do what you can to solve the problem.
Speaking of dogs…
8) You’re kind to animals
Another good sign that you’re an incredible person is that you’re kind to animals. I’ve found that most people consider themselves to be animal-lovers, but not everyone is able to put their money where their mouth is.
So if you’re the kind of person who catches spiders and takes them outside or if you go out of your way to say hello to the neighborhood cats, it’s a pretty good sign that you’re an incredible person.
While we’re on the subject, I’d encourage you to follow in my footsteps and to cut out animal products from your diet, or to cut down if you’re unable to quit cold turkey. And if you’re looking for a new pet, try to adopt instead of purchasing one from a breeder.
9) You own up to your mistakes
We all make mistakes. The real test of character is how we respond to them.
I’ve mentioned this before, but I can’t help it because it’s one of my favorite quotes and it comes from my favorite Beatle. John Lennon once said, “A mistake is only an error. It becomes a mistake when you fail to correct it.”
If you’re the kind of person who owns up to, apologizes for and tries to correct your mistakes, it’s a sure sign that you’re an incredible person. You’re also in the minority. Unfortunately, most people aren’t as awesome as you.
10) You think some things are more important than money
Finally, but perhaps most importantly, if you think that some things are more important than money, you’re probably an incredible person.
We’ve all known people who exist purely to chase money, and I’ve been guilty of it myself from time to time. In fact, my girlfriend occasionally has to ask me to stop working and to spend more time with her.
When she does, I remind myself that some things (like love) are more important than money, and it makes me a better person when I do so.
Sure, money is important, but it isn’t everything. So if you ever feel as though you’re not an incredible person, take a moment to look at your attitude towards money.
If you think that there’s nothing more important in this world than money, consider rethinking. And if you can list a half-dozen things that are more important to you than money without scraping the barrel for ideas, it’s a good sign that you’re an incredible person.
Keep being you!
