Most of us have not even met a sex robot yet and already we are being warned off them.
Tech experts have warned that the more advanced robots get, the greater the risk they will pose to mankind. And this applies to sex robots too.
In fact, your favorite robotic sex play mate might just turn on you and kill you.
Cybersecurity lecturer Dr. Nick Patterson of Deakin University, Australia told the Daily Star that hackers could hack into a sex robot and reprogram it. Hackers could conceivably program your playmate to kill you.
Patterson said that once the robot has been breached, the hacker then has full control. The hacker could conceivably order your robot sex companion to attack you instead of caress you. And that wouldn’t be hard, even for a female robot.
That’s not all.
Patterson warned that hacking into a sex robot could even be easier than gaining access to someone’s laptop or phone.
He told Daily Star: “Hackers can hack into a robot or a robotic device and have full control of the connections, arms, legs and other attached tools like in some cases knives or welding devices. Often these robots can be upwards of 200 pounds, and very strong. Once a robot is hacked, the hacker has full control and can issue instructions to the robot.
“The last thing you want is for a hacker to have control over one of these robots! Once hacked they could absolutely be used to perform physical actions for an advantageous scenario or to cause damage.”
Entrepreneur Elon Musk has repeatedly warned of the dangers of advanced AI and has even gone as far as to say that advanced AI could spark World War III.
But the risk of sex robots becoming killers in our bedrooms doesn’t only lie in software that might be hacked. It is the Internet of Things (IoT) that is the basis of the threat. As soon as a device is becomes part of IoT, it is vulnerable to a security breach.
IoT is exploding: 328 million devices are being connected to the internet each month. By 2020, more than 24 billion devices will be connected to the global internet and some of them will be sex robots.
Security threats to common household items like fridges, baby monitors and PCs connected to the internet is a very real risk and a challenge for the IoT industry.
With every device that becomes part of IoT, people are exposing themselves to new security risks.
Now, we are all already connected to the internet through our devices, our PCs, smartphones and tablets and we are aware of the security risks.
But sex robots connected to the internet pose a different risk.
Our PCs, smartphones and tablets can’t get up and whack us over the head with a baseball bat, but a hacked sex robot could do that very effectively. They are powerful enough to do us real harm if someone manages to tamper with their software.
In the not too far future it could be a way to get rid of one’s enemies.
Actually, this problem is far bigger, when you think about it.
This scenario doesn’t only apply to sex robots. Hackers could gain control of any type of internet-enabled robot and use it to attack people.
This is one of many reasons why we must insist that tech companies, researchers and authorities employ caution as far as the advancement of technology is concerned. If we don’t develop proper security protocols, we might very well be destroyed by our own creations.
