Scientists studied the daily lives of 1,000 CEOs. Here’s the 1 thing it can teach us about fulfilment and success

I’m sure you’ve read the articles about how successful people wake up early, meditate, exercise, plan their goals for the day and eat a nutritious breakfast filled with protein.

You’d have to think though, that all truly successful don’t do this. After all, we’re all human and we all have our own lives.

That’s where an interesting study from the Harvard Business School comes in. Scientists analyzed the day-to-day to lives of 1,000 CEOS in order to understand what really makes a difference in their routines.

So, what really makes the most successful, successful?

If you think it’s waking up early, you’re wrong. In fact, it has more to do with how they approach their work. Who would of thought?

The study says:

“Our evidence suggests that hands-on managerial CEOs are, on average, less effective than leaders who stay more high-level.”

Yep, it appears that CEOs who don’t obsess over every little detail of their work are more successful.

They’re able to let go and focus on the bigger picture.

Now this is all well and good for CEOs, but what about us average folk?

Well, if you have a tendency to control every little detail in your life, you might want to listen closely.

While it’s important to have some level of control in life, we can’t control everything. And trying to do so might be making you more unhappy.

Why?

Because there is very little you can control.

Think about your body right now. Your hair grows by itself. Your heart beats by itself. Your glands secret essences by themselves.

If you’re going to be human, you have to trust that your body is going to work. You don’t have voluntary control of these things.

But most of us have a strange anxiety to control everything in our lives. Much of the time, this control comes from fear. We control things to prevent anything from going wrong.

But it’s important to ask yourself, if you let go control, will the future alter in a drastic, negative way? If not, then let it go. You can’t let fears take control of you.

CEOs who achieve more success are able to let go of control. And the same can be said for us in life.

Instead of being afraid of the future, pay attention to the current moment. Try to do less. When you micromanage every aspect of your life, you have too much on your plate and you can’t enjoy the present moment.

By doing less, you’ll be more engaged in what you’re doing and you’ll do a better quality job. And the present moment is where the future is created.
