Scientists discover the number one food for staying young

What if I told you there was a secret to staying young, and you have immediate access to it?

Anti-aging is serious stuff, and that’s why it’s come under such intense scrutiny from scientists.

In a research study published in the journal Cell Metabolism, scientists from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis conducted a 12 month long examination of the impact of certain foods on mice.

They found that when they fed older mice drinking water with a high dose of a natural compound called nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN) – found in broccoli, cucumbers, cabbage, edamame and avocado – the older mice enjoyed a number of benefits including better skeletal muscle, insulin sensitivity, liver and eye function, improved physical activity levels, better immune function and improved body weight, according to the science website Science Daily.

That’s right: the research results suggest that increasing your consumption of vegetables, particularly broccoli, slows down your aging process.

Americans are increasing their broccoli consumption

According to the United States Agriculture Department, in 2012 Americans consumed double the amount of broccoli compared with the levels they ate in 1990.

It’s likely this trend will continue, according to the research firm Mintel: in 2015, $54.6 billion was spent on vegetables and this is expected to increase by 13% in 2020.

“An emphasis on freshness, convenience, and nutrition can help propel sales of fresh vegetables, especially fresh-cut salad which benefits from strong product innovation,” Mintel’s researchers wrote in their May 2016 vegetables report.

10 benefits of regularly eating broccoli

In addition to the anti-aging benefits described above, here are some additional benefits to regularly eating broccoli, according to health practitioners.

  1. Cancer prevention: Broccoli shares cancer fighting and immune boosting properties with other cruciferous vegetables such as cauliflower, brussels sprouts and cabbage.
  2. Cholesterol reduction: Broccoli is packed with soluble fiber that draws cholesterol out of your body, like many whole foods.
  3. Reducing allergic reaction and inflammation: Broccoli has significant amounts of omega 3 fatty acids, which are well known as anti-inflammatory.
  4. Powerful antioxidant: Broccoli is deeply concentrated with vitamin C, making it great for immunity.
  5. Bone health: Broccoli contains high levels of both calcium and vitamin K, which are vital for bone health and prevention of osteoporosis.
  6. Heart health: One of the isothiocyanates (ITCs) in broccoli have anti-inflammatory properties, which help to prevent and even reverse some of the damage to blood vessel linings that can be caused by inflammation due to chronic blood sugar problems.
  7. Diet aid: Broccoli is a carb and high in fiber, which aids in digestion, prevents constipation, maintains low blood sugar and curbs overeating.
  8. Great for detoxification: Broccoli is high in fiber which helps to get rid of toxins in the digestive tract.
  9. Skin care: Skin care isn’t only about glow, but also immunity. The antioxidants and nutrients like vitamin C, and the minerals copper and zinc, help to maintain healthy skin.
  10. Eye care: Broccoli contains beta-carotene, vitamin A, phosphorous and other vitamins such as B complex, vitamin C and E. These are all rich nutrients that help with eye health, protecting the eyes against muscular degeneration, cataract and repairs damage.
