People who never settle for mediocrity in life usually have these 8 distinct strengths

Ever met someone who just radiates this undeniable aura of greatness? You can feel it in the air when they walk into a room – that energy, that spark that sets them apart from the rest of us mere mortals.

I’ve had the privilege of rubbing elbows with a few of these extraordinary beings, and let me tell you, they’re like a breath of fresh air in a world often content with just being okay.

What’s their secret, you ask? Well, after some serious observation and a bit of soul-searching, I’ve boiled it down to eight standout qualities that seem to fuel their meteoric rise above the ordinary.

So grab a seat and get ready to dive into the fascinating world of those who refuse to settle for anything less than extraordinary. Trust me, it’s a journey worth embarking on.

1) Embracing impermanence

High achievers get it: everything is transient.

This principle is deeply rooted in Buddhism and mindfulness practice. It’s called the concept of impermanence.

Impermanence is the idea that everything changes and nothing remains constant. Realizing this, individuals who shun mediocrity don’t hold onto past failures or successes. Instead, they see each moment as a fresh opportunity to strive for excellence, knowing that every situation is fleeting and can be shaped by their actions.

This acceptance of impermanence allows them to live in the present while working towards a better future. It frees them from the shackles of stagnation and propels them on their path to achieving greatness.

2) Cultivating mindfulness

One of the most profound strengths I’ve noticed in lofty goal-setters is their ability to cultivate mindfulness.

Did you know that some of the most successful individuals in history practice mindfulness? It’s a fact. Success icons like Bill Gates, Oprah Winfrey, and Jeff Bezos share more than just their millionaire or billionaire status—they credit meditation as a pivotal tool for their success.

Now, I lay no claim to being a mover and shaker in my field. But as someone who practices mindfulness daily, I can vouch for its transformative power. It’s not just about sitting cross-legged and clearing your mind. It’s about being fully present and engaged in the current moment, without judgment or distraction.

People who strive for excellence understand the importance of this. They know that to achieve their goals, they must first be fully present in their actions. Whether it’s a complex task at work or a simple conversation with a loved one, they give it their undivided attention.

3) Understanding the nature of suffering

This might seem a bit heavy, but those who refuse to settle for mediocrity often have a deep understanding of suffering. This understanding doesn’t make them cynical or pessimistic. Instead, it makes them more compassionate, resilient, and driven.

In Buddhism, the First Noble Truth is the truth of suffering. It’s not to say that life is full of misery but to acknowledge that suffering is an inherent part of human existence. Whether it’s physical pain, emotional distress, or existential angst, we all experience suffering in one form or another.

People who strive for excellence are aware of this. They acknowledge their struggles and use them as fuel for growth rather than reasons for despair. They don’t allow their challenges to define them but use them as stepping stones to reach their goals.

4) Practicing acceptance

Those who aspire to greatness often hold acceptance close to their hearts, almost like a favorite pair of socks—they might not be flashy, but boy, are they comfortable!

It sounds strange, isn’t it? To mention ‘greatness’ and ‘acceptance’ in the same breath. But acceptance doesn’t mean resignation or complacency. Instead, it’s the understanding and acknowledgement of things as they are, without trying to change or deny the reality. It’s coming to terms with life’s ups and downs while staying committed to making improvements.

Those who never settle understand that life won’t always go as planned. They might encounter setbacks, face rejections, and even fail sometimes. But instead of resisting these realities or dwelling on them, they accept them as part of the journey.

5) Living with maximum impact and minimum ego

In my journey, both personal and professional, I’ve found that those who dream big and dare to fail embody a distinct quality: they live with maximum impact and minimum ego.

This principle, which I discuss in depth in my book, “Hidden Secrets of Buddhism: How To Live With Maximum Impact and Minimum Ego”, is about making a positive difference in the world while keeping your ego in check.

Those who never settle understand that their actions have consequences, and they strive to make those consequences as positive as possible. They’re not driven by self-aggrandizement or personal gain but by the desire to create a meaningful impact.

At the same time, they keep their ego in check. They know that ego can cloud judgement, hinder growth, and lead to complacency. They’re not afraid to admit when they’re wrong or ask for help when they need it.

Living with maximum impact and minimum ego is about making your life count without letting your sense of self-importance get in the way. It’s about being true to yourself and your values while striving to make the world a better place.

6) Valuing inner peace over external validation

A key strength of ambitious dream-seekers is their prioritization of inner peace over external validation.

Think about it: When you’re constantly seeking validation from others, you’re essentially handing over your happiness to external forces, which is fleeting and unreliable. On the other hand, cultivating inner peace allows you to find contentment and satisfaction regardless of external circumstances.

Inner peace provides a stable foundation from which to navigate life’s challenges with resilience and clarity. It’s about being grounded in your own sense of self-worth and not relying on others to define your value. By focusing on inner peace, you can cultivate a deeper understanding of your goals and potential, which ultimately leads to a more authentic and fulfilling life journey.

7) Embracing compassion and kindness

Those who refuse to settle for mediocrity often possess a deep sense of compassion and kindness, not only towards others but also towards themselves.

In Buddhism, compassion and kindness are not just virtues but essential practices for personal growth and enlightenment. These individuals understand that in order to be genuinely successful and content in life, they need to cultivate a heart that is open and kind.

The Dalai Lama once said, “If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion.” This quote encapsulates the essence of their approach.

These individuals don’t see kindness as a weakness but as a strength. They believe in lifting others up, not tearing them down.

That’s not all. They extend the same kindness and compassion to themselves. Instead of berating themselves for their failures, they use them as opportunities for learning and growth.

8) Finding strength in stillness

In a world where hustle culture is glorified, kicking back and chilling might seem like wasted time. But here’s the scoop: the real go-getters swear by the power of mindfulness and find strength in quiet reflections.

Mindfulness encourages us to slow down, to observe our thoughts and feelings without judgment, and to fully engage with the present moment. It’s in these moments of stillness that we can gain clarity, make better decisions, and recharge our mental and emotional batteries.

Constant hustle without pause can lead to burnout and decrease productivity—a truth not lost on those who aim high and work hard. Sometimes, the best thing to do is nothing. To just sit quietly, breathe, and let their minds rest.

Reject the ordinary, Embrace the extraordinary!

Hey you, yeah, you with the dreams that stretch beyond the horizon. It’s time to shake off the shackles of mediocrity and step into the brilliance of your potential. Mediocrity? That’s yesterday’s news.

Today, we’re rewriting the script, carving our own path towards greatness. It’s about daring to defy the status quo, to leap fearlessly into the unknown, fueled by the fire of our passion and the beat of our hearts. So, why settle for ordinary when you were born to be extraordinary?

As the author of “Hidden Secrets of Buddhism: How To Live With Maximum Impact and Minimum Ego”, I delve deeper into these principles in my book. It’s designed to guide you in embracing your uqniue strengths and applying Buddhist wisdom to your daily life.

Remember, striving for excellence isn’t a destination but a journey. It’s about constantly evolving, learning, and growing. And each step you take on this path takes you further away from mediocrity and closer to a life of purpose, fulfillment, and inner peace.
