10 reasons why it isn’t weird to be in love with a fictional character

There are tons of shows, movies, and books out there, each one featuring their own main characters – usually very attractive, lovable characters.

No wonder some people fall in love with fictional characters from time to time! But one question remains: is it weird to fall in love with a fictional character?

Here are 10 reasons why the answer is no:

1) It’s common to be attracted to fictional characters

First off, a reason why it’s not weird to fall in love with a fictional character is that it’s pretty common for people to find themselves attracted to fictional characters.

Just look at the popularity of fan fiction.

There are tons of stories about people falling in love with fictional characters.

There are also tons of people who have crushes on characters from movies and TV.

It’s not that different from being attracted to someone in real life.

Knowing that you aren’t alone with this attraction can help you feel better about it.

You just have to remember that real people are better for you in every way!

Fictional characters can be great role models, but they don’t have the same knowledge of you.

They don’t know your strengths, weaknesses, and dreams. And they definitely don’t know what you’re like in person.

They don’t know what your laugh sounds like or how you sob when you cry. Real people know all of those things, which is why they’re better for you.

However, given the popularity of fanfiction and simply fan accounts for fictional characters on Twitter, Tumblr, Instagram, and Tiktok, you can tell that lots of people have similar feelings.

Now: for some fans, it’s not necessarily that they’re in love with those characters, they are more obsessed with them than in love.

Obsession is not always healthy.

It’s not healthy to be obsessed with someone you don’t know, even if that person is a fictional character.

If you ever find yourself obsessing over a fictional character, try to take a step back and look at things from an outside perspective.

Then ask yourself if it’s healthy for you to feel this way about a fictional character.

Now, at what point are we talking about obsession?

I’d say obsession is when you think about the character all the time.

It’s when you think about them so much that it interferes with your everyday life.

If you find yourself unable to stop thinking about this fictional character, if they’re taking up too much of your head space, then it might be a good idea to take a step back and reevaluate what you are doing right now.

You see, once you start feeling panicked as soon as you don’t have your phone and can’t look at your character, that’s when it might become a problem.

If you find yourself unable to focus on your studies or work because you’re thinking about your character, that’s when it might be a problem.

Do you find yourself unable to go to sleep at night because you’re thinking about your character? That might also be problematic.

So just keep in mind that obsession isn’t healthy and it can lead to some serious problems in the future.

You don’t want to be looking back on this time in your life and regretting what you did.

However, feeling in love with a character? That is absolutely normal and you’re by far not alone with it!

2) You can’t help who you’re attracted to

Just like you can’t control who likes you, you can’t control who you’re attracted to.

Some people might try to tell you that you’re in denial, or you’re trying to run away from your problems by being attracted to someone who doesn’t exist.

They might even try to tell you that you’re doing this because you don’t want a relationship.

Maybe they think you’re trying to avoid commitment or responsibility.

All those things sound ridiculous when you think about it – because you can’t control who you’re attracted to!

You can’t control what your heart desires. If you were to choose who you’re attracted to, you’d probably be in a lot of trouble.

You’d probably be attracted to all the wrong people! There’s no use in denying the fact that you’re attracted to fictional characters.

It’s okay, and you don’t need to change it. You don’t need to look for reasons why this is happening. There’s no need – you just need to accept it and learn to live with it.

Now, thinking about the fact that you can’t help who you’re attracted to, let’s add to this by saying fictional characters are always made out to be the most attractive possible.

The actors and actresses are attractive, their character traits are lovable, and they’re always portrayed in a positive light.

It’s not surprising that you’re attracted to them! You can’t help who you’re attracted to.

You can’t choose who you fall in love with, so don’t feel bad or try to hide it.

Just like you can’t control what your heart desires, you also can’t control who you love.

You might be able to control whether or not you act on your feelings for the character and pursue a (fictional) relationship with them, but falling in love with them? There’s no way you can control that!

Now, with the media literally making those characters as attractive as possible, it’s normal to be attracted to them.

However, just because you’re attracted to them doesn’t mean you have to act on it.

You can control how you act on those feelings.

3) It’s just a crush, not a relationship

Some people might think that you’re actually in a relationship with the character you’re attracted to.

They might say that you’re living in denial, or that you need help.

This is ridiculous! They are just crushes! You aren’t in a relationship with them, so you don’t need to worry about it too much.

You aren’t doing anything wrong by fantasizing about them.

However, it is also important for you to be aware of the fact that although falling in love with a fictional character is nothing weird, you need to stay realistic about the fact that you can’t really be with them.

You can’t date them, you can’t marry them, and you aren’t able to live with them.

They are fictional characters, so they don’t exist.

It’s okay to be attracted to them, but it’s important not to expect that you’ll ever be able to actually meet them in person or be with them.

There is a difference between being realistic and living in denial.

It’s okay to be attracted to someone you don’t know. It doesn’t make you immoral or depraved.

It doesn’t mean you need to change who you are. It just means you’re human and every human experiences attraction.

It’s normal! You don’t know your crushes and they don’t know you. You don’t know what they’re like in real life, or how they would treat you.

4) Fictional characters are sometimes based on real people

Some fictional characters are actually based on real people.

Think about how many actors and actresses have played autobiographies on TV shows or movies based on true events.

There are tons of shows that use the same actors to play different characters, so sometimes you could be attracted to a character who’s based on a real person.

You might not even know! You might have a crush on a guy from a movie, but it could be the person the movie is based on that you are truly in love with.

Needless to say, it might also just be the actor or actress you are in love with, not necessarily the fictional character.

You could have a crush on The Hulk, but it could actually be Lou Ferrigno.

You could be in love with Hermione Granger, but could also be in love with Emma Watson.

You just don’t know! The point is, that you might not be attracted to the fictional character you think you are.

It’s possible that you might actually be attracted to a real person who plays a fictional character. It’s strange, but it happens!

You see, many people love actors and actresses, and they fall in love with almost every character that person plays.

5) It doesn’t mean you’re broken or defective in any way

Some people might try to make you feel bad about falling in love with a fictional character.

They might try to make you feel like you’re broken or defective in some way.

But you’re not! You’re just a normal person who is capable of feeling attraction to other people.

You’re not broken or defective – you’re just a person! You’re a person who is just as capable of falling in love as anyone else.

People who don’t like fictional characters don’t like to admit that you can fall in love with something you don’t know in real life.

They don’t like to admit that you can fall in love with something that doesn’t exist.

No matter how hard they try to make you feel bad about loving a fictional character, you shouldn’t listen to them.

You shouldn’t feel ashamed of your feelings or try to change them.

You shouldn’t feel like you need to apologize for being human. You shouldn’t deny yourself the ability to be happy. Instead, you should embrace your feelings!

You see, there is nothing wrong with being in love with a fictional character, it shows that you have the capacity to love and that you are a normal human being.

You should embrace your feelings, not run from them.

You should accept who you are and love yourself for who you are!

6) You can still enjoy the things you love without feeling guilty or ashamed of your feelings

Some people might try to make you feel like you can’t watch the show you love or read the book you love anymore because the fictional character you love is in it.

But you don’t have to feel guilty, ashamed, or embarrassed about the things you love.

You don’t have to stop watching the show or reading the book just because you’re in love with a fictional character.

You see, you don’t have to hide who you are! The fictional character is not real.

You don’t have to worry about hurting their feelings. You aren’t disrespecting them. You aren’t cheating on them. None of that matters.

It’s okay to still love the things you love, even if they aren’t real.

It’s okay to still enjoy the things you enjoy. You don’t have to feel guilty for loving the things you love.

Turns out you don’t have to hide from your feelings. You don’t have to be ashamed of who you are.

There is nothing morally wrong with falling in love with a fictional character, so why would you feel bad about it?

Think about it: people have had crushes on characters for ages, in the past, it was book characters, now, it’s both books and movies.

Is there anything wrong or shameful about that? No!

7) Falling in love with a fictional character helps you realize what you want in a partner

Falling in love with a fictional character is great because it helps you realize what you want in a partner.

You can use your fictional character as a sort of template for what you’re looking for in a partner.

Think about it: you can ask yourself things like: what would they be like in a relationship? What would they do in this situation? How would they react to this? What would they want to change in their life?

By answering these questions, you can get a good idea of what you want in a partner.

You can look at your fictional character and think, that’s what I want in a partner!

You can use your fictional crush to help you figure out what you want in a partner!

And the best part?

You can also use your fictional crush to help you learn more about yourself.

Sometimes, we learn more about our own personalities and desires when we’re in love with a fictional character.

When you’re in love with a fictional character, you can use that relationship to help you figure out what you want in a partner.

Now: it’s important to remember that fictional characters are not real and they often represent an ideal, especially when it comes to outer appearances.

Actors and actresses spend hours in makeup, just to get that perfect “no-makeup makeup” and the dreamy “just woke up”- look.

When you start to believe that this is what people actually look like in real life, you might set unrealistic expectations for yourself and your future partner.

But this is also a good thing because it helps you to understand what you want in a partner, which is an important part of the relationship-building process.

This means, you will know what you want in a partner appearance-wise – what are you attracted to?

But also personality-wise, you see, fictional characters usually have very extreme personalities, for example, the broody hero, or the introverted but creative artist.

While people in real life might not always follow all these personality traits, you might find that you are more attracted to hero-like men or creative women!

So it’s a good thing to know what you want in a partner.

And it’s a good thing to know what you don’t want in a partner.

There is nothing wrong with being attracted to fictional characters!

It helps you understand what you want and don’t want in your own relationship, and that’s always important!

Falling in love with a fictional character can help you realize what you want in a partner.

And trust me, knowing what you want in the dating world will be a huge advantage further down the line!

8) It’s not like you’re stalking the actor or something… right?

Some people might try to make you feel bad for being in love with a fictional character.

They might try to make you feel like you’re stalking the actor who plays that character.

Now, while I get that you might be following the actor or actress on social media (nothing wrong with that), you’re most probably not actually stalking them, right?

As long as you realize that the actors and actresses have their own life and are not that fictional characters, and you leave them their privacy, you’re probably not stalking them.

It’s not like you’re constantly trying to get a glimpse of the actor or actress in your everyday life, right?

As long as you realize that their lives are their own, and you respect that, there is no problem.

If you try to get a glimpse of the actor or actress in real life or try to talk to them when they actually just want to go about their life, then that’s where it becomes stalking.

So just keep this in mind before anyone tries to make you feel bad for being in love with a fictional character.

As long as you aren’t stalking them, you are fine.

9) It can improve your fantasy

One thing that is for sure is that being in love with a fictional character can improve your fantasy and creativity.

You see, when you are in love with a fictional character, you most probably have no other option than to fantasize about them!

And that’s a good thing!

Because fantasy is a huge part of what makes us human, the more we are able to fantasize, the better our creativity becomes.

So if you fall in love with a fictional character, don’t be afraid to fantasize about him or her.

It will only make you a more creative person!

As long as you remember that it is just fantasy, you are okay!

10) It will be even better once you find your dream partner in real life

After having been in love with a fictional character, it will be even better when you find your dream partner in real life!

It’s like you have been craving pizza for a really long time, and then you finally get to eat one!

The thing is, fantasizing is great and fictional characters are most likely the “ideal” partner, but nothing is better than being with someone who is real and tangible, who you can touch and talk to.

Once you find your dream person, you will feel even better about everything!

You’re not weird

The main takeaway here is, that you are not weird for being attracted to fictional characters.

That is completely normal and okay!

So don’t be afraid to talk about it and don’t let anyone make you feel bad for it.

If you want to open up about it to your friends, that’s totally an option, but if you want to keep things to yourself, that is fine, too.

Just know that you are definitely not alone with this problem and there is nothing weird about it!

It’s normal, and you are not weird for being into fictional characters.
