How to free your mind spiritually: 15 key steps

Have you ever been stuck for hours or even days with thoughts that are so stressful, it feels like your brain has literally paralyzed?

It might be time to do something to free your mind spiritually.

Here is a list of 15 key steps you can take right now, without spending any money.

1) Acknowledge the beauty in the present moment

Start by acknowledging what is going on around you.

For example, if you are stuck in a traffic jam, stop fighting it and learn to appreciate the beauty of nature; hear the birds chirping, feel the sun on your skin and smell the different aromas.

The next time you are at a party with friends, turn off your cellphone, leave all your worries behind and just be there with them.

It gets better:

As you do this more often, you will start to realize how much we are missing by focusing so much on the past and the future.

Try to see every moment as a blessing.

2) Read inspirational quotes on the subjects that are important to you every morning

Have you ever found yourself thinking or saying negative things like “I’m not good enough”, “I need to be the best” or “I am broken”?

I know the feeling:

It took me several years of my life to realize that these thoughts come from ego and the fact that I was comparing myself with others.

Most of us have been conditioned to do this at a very young age, by comparing grades in school, beauty, or popularity; this causes what many psychologists refer to as a “sense of lack”.

However, regularly exposing ourselves to inspirational quotes on the subjects that are important for us can make a big difference.

Trust me, this step can help you free your mind spiritually in less than 5 minutes a day.

You can find an abundance of inspirational quotes on the internet and keep them in a place where you can see them.

3) Write down your thoughts, feelings, and worries when they come to mind

I know what you are thinking:

“But I have more than one thought and this takes too much time”.

The reality is, however, that most of us are not aware of the thoughts that come to our mind and this leads to feeling emotionally “stuck”, which results in feeling physically stuck.

For example, if a thought like “I am not good enough” comes to your mind several times a day, you will eventually start projecting these thoughts on others.

Then, when you meet someone new, this is how you will treat them.

I know it sounds a bit complicated but writing it down makes things clearer and easier to understand.

Plus, when you write down the thoughts that come to your mind, there are three things that happen:

  • If they are negative thoughts- they will eventually turn positive.
  • If they are positive thoughts- you will start thinking about what you can do to make this thought a reality.
  • And if you want to change them completely from negative to positive thoughts, write down the opposite: If a thought is negative-make it positive.

4) Get out of the toxic spirituality trap

Have you ever wondered why there is so much negativity in the spirituality community?

When it comes to your personal spiritual journey, which toxic habits have you unknowingly picked up?

Is it the need to be positive all the time? Is it a sense of superiority over those who lack spiritual awareness?

Even well-meaning gurus and experts can get it wrong.

The result is that you end up achieving the opposite of what you’re searching for. You do more to harm yourself than to heal.

You may even hurt those around you.

In this eye-opening video, the shaman Rudá Iandé explains how so many of us fall into the toxic spirituality trap. He himself went through a similar experience at the start of his journey.

As he mentions in the video, spirituality should be about empowering yourself. Not suppressing emotions, not judging others, but forming a pure connection with who you are at your core.

Even if you’re well into your spiritual journey, it’s never too late to unlearn the myths you’ve bought for truth!

5) Limit your social media consumption to one hour per day at most

Another simple yet effective way to free your mind spiritually is to limit the time you spend on social media.

You probably know that most of the content on social media is shallow and doesn’t actually help you grow spiritually.

To avoid this, schedule your social media consumption in advance.

Set it up so that you only have one hour each day to browse your favorite platforms.

That way, you won’t find yourself wasting time with endless scrolling for no reason or looking at people who are happy- but only posting pictures of them doing great things.

You can also find new hobbies, meet new people and find the motivation to launch a project you’ve always wanted to try out.

A word of warning:

It may be a good idea to keep your social media consumption to yourself for now.

If you tell your friends how much time you are limiting yourself, 9 times out of 10 they will try to persuade you to increase the time.

This is why it’s better not to share your new social media schedule with anyone-especially if it’s for a spiritual reason.

6) Revisit unpleasant events without judgment, but with total acceptance instead

You’ve probably heard others say how wonderful it is to live in the moment.

This, however, is easier said than done.

Most of us unconsciously judge the past, which is why we continue to relive our “terrible” childhood memories and never forget painful past events as if they happened yesterday.

As a result, we can’t let go of them.

This keeps us stuck in the world of illusion and keeps our minds busy with useless clutter.

While the universe is generous enough to give you a second chance at life, it’s your responsibility to waste it in a way that makes you happy.

So take the next step:

Free your mind from the past and create new opportunities for you and your loved ones by accepting what happened in a way that honors your emotions.

7) Find a balance between your spiritual needs and your worldly needs

To keep your mind and spirit healthy and balanced, it’s important to find a balance between your spiritual needs and your worldly needs.

For example, you’re probably aware that the lack of sleep will drag you down.

Whether this is because of work or a stressful personal life, having a good night’s sleep can be the key to having more energy for meditation.

The same goes for physical activity.

While people who are more active physically without getting out of balance tend to be happier, they can sometimes feel better than those who are overly spiritual.

This is because excessive physical activity can also drag your mind and body down if you’re not careful.

So, how do you find the right balance?

It’s all about listening to your body. Even if it sounds strange, when you take care of your body and observe its signals, you become healthier both mentally and physically.

8) Perform an act of kindness for someone else every day

The soul doesn’t have time for selfishness or judgment.

It’s not about going around and helping people who are stuck in a situation you can easily help them out of.

The true soul-shaper is the one who can lift up others through their own strength, which is why it’s important to find an act of kindness to perform every day.

When you make someone else feel good, it actually affects your own spiritual growth positively.

Even if it’s as simple as telling a homeless person that you appreciate his presence and that he’s an asset to the community, you will notice how much good you did for yourself.

You may even find yourself feeling more generous towards others.

Key point:

When you’re performing an act of kindness, don’t expect anything in return. Then your mind will be free spiritually to feel the many blessings.

9) Breathe or feel your breath instead of fighting it or letting it go by you

One of the best ways to free your mind spiritually is to breathe.

The more you practice it, the stronger the connection between your body, mind, and soul will become.

But I get it, practicing breathing isn’t always easy, especially if you’ve been following a more traditional approach to the spiritual journey.

If that’s the case, I highly recommend watching this free breathwork video, created by the shaman, Rudá Iandê.

Rudá isn’t another self-professed life coach. Through shamanism and his own life journey, he’s created a modern-day twist to ancient healing techniques.

The exercises in his invigorating video combine years of breathwork experience and ancient shamanic beliefs, designed to help you relax and check in with your body and soul.

After many years of suppressing my emotions, Rudá’s dynamic breathwork flow quite literally revived that connection.

And that’s what you need:

A spark to reconnect you with your feelings so that you can begin focusing on the most important relationship of all – the one you have with yourself.

10) Connect with nature by spending time outside or maintaining a garden

There’s something so powerful about being in nature, especially when you’re not surrounded by people.

It can help you reconnect with your inner body and voice, even if you don’t have time to meditate.

And it can also keep your mind and emotions free of unnecessary clutter by offering a place to connect with the rest of humanity- by simply feeding yourself.

If you’re a gardener, this is doubly true because it will give you a chance to nurture yourself while you are helping others.

To continue your spiritual journey, connect with nature in one of the following ways:

  • Take a walk in nature every day – even if it’s just for 10 minutes or an hour after work.
  • Get outside and enjoy some fresh air – even if it’s cloudy or cold.
  • Visit your garden at least once a week to water it and prune it.

Take a stroll in your own garden when you notice that there’s something missing or that something is growing too fast, or when you feel a lack of love from the plants. This will help you connect with nature again.

11) Do something physical like yoga or a run that releases endorphins

Here’s the truth:

The more you work out, the less anxious you’ll feel.

After practicing yoga and meditation for a while, I started to realize that my body was a lot less weighed down.

I was able to think clearer, be more active, and stay in a calm emotional state.

In other words, my mind, body, and soul were more in sync.

And I know that the regular practice of yoga and meditation helped me get there.

The more you move your body, the more endorphins you release and the happier you feel and stay.

You can even meditate as you exercise or do a relaxing warm-up before or after your workout in order to reap even better benefits.

This is the way you should use your body to create more energy and inner balance.

12) Forgive yourself and others who have wronged you in the past

How can you free your mind spiritually?

The trick is to make peace with yourself and develop a sense of forgiveness.

If you can forgive someone who has wronged you, you will be reborn spiritually.

It’s the only way to stop carrying anger with you that harms your health and keeps your mind clouded.

When I look back on my life, I can see how many mistakes I’ve made.

Many of them hurt others and even caused me pain that I still carry with me.

So how do you make peace with yourself so that you can be free from all the anger and bitterness?

The answer is, through forgiveness. Forgiveness is a fundamental characteristic of the soul, the place where we are allowed to let go of those burdens, the ones that we carry for years.

You may think you need a lot more than forgiveness to clean up your karmic debts.

But practicing forgiveness can be the first step towards that inner peace, renewal, and happiness.

13) Find the place in your home where you feel most at ease

The great thing about our homes is that they allow us to literally be ourselves — and that can help you reconnect with your inner soul.

If you live in a cluttered place, it’s hard to be your authentic self.

But if you can find the quietest, most peaceful corner of the home, you will be able to release the negative thoughts and emotions that have built up inside you for years.

You’ll even feel more energetic and connected with yourself.

In addition, it helps to create a personal altar or shrine in your home.

When you do this, you’re practicing meditation and spirituality in the most natural way possible — through art, color, smell, and sound.

By having something personal to look at or touch when you’re feeling down, you will feel as though something special is about to happen — that some kind of spiritual boost is waiting for you.

And that is exactly the way to help you free your mind of all the negativity and mental clutter that is built upon your soul.

14) Share positive thoughts with others

Here’s an interesting fact:

If you think nice thoughts, they’ll come true.

There’s an old saying that “you have to eat your veggies (or at least think about it) in order to grow a great life.”

So if you want to be spiritually free, one of the best things you can do is share the positive thoughts that come up in your mind with others.

The more people you share them with, the more they will expand and grow.

And the more people you talk to, the more you’ll get connected with your inner self and start feeling lighter and happier.

Here are some quick and easy ways how to say thanks to others that have helped you out of a tough situation:

  • Tell your boss, landlord, or other business owners how their advice has helped you.
  • Give a tip to your waiter or waitress that gave you good service.
  • Say thank you in the elevator after someone helps push the buttons for you.

15) Surround yourself with friends and others who are spiritually receptive

Here’s another great way to free your mind spiritually free:

Be around people who are in good spirits, who are happy, and who can keep your mind from straying too far into negativity.

You will feel the same way!

It’s true that we can be influenced by others, both positively and negatively, through their clothing and behavior.

But the most important thing is to be sure that you are surrounded by people who have a good sense of faith.

If you have friends who think like you, then fine. But if not, try to find ways to build your own community of like-minded individuals.

Once they become a part of your inner circle, you will be able to connect with each other on a deeper level, spiritually and emotionally.

And this will help you feel happier than before.

Final thoughts

The more you free your mind spiritually, the more energy and emotional relief you will feel.

You will begin to feel more hopeful about life, have a better sense of intuition, and think clearer.

And that is what true spirituality is all about.
