An awakening can be a rapid change in perspective or a more gradual process of opening to spiritual realities, either of which may last anywhere between days and years.
Some awakenings are much less intense, while others can take months.
In general, how long an awakening last is likely linked to the individual’s personality and life experience.
Even though it is not the same for everyone, there are still some things that seem to affect how long an awakening can last in general.
What are the usual triggers?
There are many explanations for the cause of a spiritual awakening.
In the early texts, the awakening was sometimes described as a sudden event.
Triggers can range from traumatic experiences to simple little changes in life that, for some reason, catch our attention and make us consider things from a new perspective.
One of the common triggers is the death of someone close to us and the accompanying pain it brings us (It doesn’t have to be death, it can be any kind of loss).
As a result, people start looking for answers.
When we have a very painful experience, we tend to look for answers to the unknown.
We realize that little things which bothered us before don’t matter anymore after such an event.
It can also be something joyous like a birth of a child.
Such an event brings enormous changes into the lives of the parents and the entire family. It is the time when the priorities change and the perception shifts.
People start looking for answers rather than questions.
It appears that almost all awakenings are preceded by inner turmoil and turmoil in one’s life.
The person is going through a transitional phase between the way he sees the world and his innermost values.
A person starts questioning oneself, beliefs, and the perception of the world. Everything seems to be upside down.
This is the point when the individual needs an explanation for all these changes that have taken place within him and in his life.
For some people, the trigger is divorce. It is usually the time when everything falls apart.
That’s when you know that you truly need to rely on yourself and create a better future for yourself and your family.
At some point in their lives, even the most loving of parents can realize that they need to be on their own.
Such a realization often occurs after they have failed in one way or another to live up to the expectations of their children.
It provides an opportunity for a person to figure out what is really important and set some healthier boundaries along the way.
How long can it last?
The length of awakening depends on the individual. It can last a few days up to a few years.
Although there are some essential commonalities, each person is different.
The length of the stages of the spiritual awakening can also differ and largely depends on the person and their personal experience.
It may take a while also to integrate all the things you now understand better, but somehow our habits pull us to continue to behave in the same way as before.
Seeing our true purpose in life and how we relate to the world around us is one of the signs of what a spiritual awakening and, more specifically, enlightenment truly feels like.
It’s something that takes time and being with the right people to bring us to this state of being makes it easier.
Some people may remain in the equivalent of a spiritual roller coaster, where they go back and forth between spiritual and material life, while others settle into a more balanced path and eventually are able to balance their physical life with their spiritual side.
We are all different people with different personalities and life experiences.
However, there are some basic characteristics of the awakening that can be found in almost all people who have experienced it.
Bear in mind that these stages are not set in stone, nor do they have to be linear or constant stages.
There can be periods of regression, and they are not necessarily experienced in the same order by all.
However, there are some things you can do to change the way you view your world.
You can impact your spiritual awakening by choosing to become a better person.
The truth is, most of us never realize how much power and potential lies within us.
We become bogged down by continuous conditioning from society, the media, our education system, and more.
The result?
The reality we create becomes detached from the reality that lives within our consciousness.
I learned this (and much more) from the world-renowned shaman Rudá Iandé. In this excellent free video, Rudá explains how you can lift the mental chains and get back to the core of your being.
A word of caution – Rudá isn’t your typical shaman.
He doesn’t paint a pretty picture or sprout toxic positivity like so many other gurus do.
Instead, he’s going to force you to look inwards and confront the demons within. It’s a powerful approach, but one that works.
So if you’re ready to take this first step and align your dreams with your reality, there’s no better place to start than with Rudá’s unique technique

7 stages of the spiritual awakening
Spiritual awakening is usually a real eye-opener for many of us.
We realize that there are things we haven’t noticed before, and we are forced to question our past behavior and beliefs.
We come to a point when what we thought was the truth is no longer true for us, and something totally new comes to replace it.
Because spiritual awakening is such a drastic change in our lives, it sometimes feels like a roller coaster ride.
There are 7 stages that every person experiencing awakening experiences.
1) Feeling confused
This may be the most difficult phase of all because you may start feeling stuck in your life without any vision of where you should go or be able to understand everything that occurred in the past.
You may feel unable to comprehend what went wrong in your life or what you could do differently in the future.
The confusion, however, is temporary.
The most important thing is not to fall into despair. The fog will start clearing up soon, and you will be able to start taking steps towards the new way of life.
But at this point, it’s worth remembering that the old self is a necessary step in your spiritual growth and not necessarily something to be ashamed of or deny.
You may feel like there are forces that are controlling your life, and they were always against you, but make sure you don’t start feeling like a victim.
2) Experiencing the shift of perception
Once the initial phase is over, you will start noticing that your perception has shifted significantly and all the things you were okay with are starting to bother you, and all the things that once bothered you feel okay now.
This phase can be quite challenging because you will begin to wonder if something is wrong with you and if everyone else is seeing things the way they used to.
In addition, you may feel like there is no way to communicate with other people about what you’re experiencing.
You will start feeling different from the rest of the people, and this may cause a feeling of loneliness and depression.
However, it’s important not to panic or think that you will go crazy if someone starts saying that your reality is different from theirs.
But I get it, it can be difficult to be overwhelmed by so many emotions at once.
If that’s the case, I highly recommend watching this free breathwork video, created by the shaman, Rudá Iandê.
Rudá isn’t another self-professed life coach. Through shamanism and his own life journey, he’s created a modern-day twist to ancient healing techniques.
The exercises in his invigorating video combine years of breathwork experience and ancient shamanic beliefs, designed to help you relax and check in with your body and soul.
After many years of suppressing my emotions, Rudá’s dynamic breathwork flow quite literally revived that connection.
And that’s what you need:
A spark to reconnect you with your feelings so that you can begin focusing on the most important relationship of all – the one you have with yourself.
So if you’re ready to take back control over your mind, body, and soul, if you’re ready to say goodbye to anxiety and stress, check out his genuine advice below.

3) Questioning every single thing
This is the point where you will start thinking about every single person in your life and all your relationships.
You will question your way of living your life, your career, and your place in the world.
You will start questioning every single thing that has happened to you up to this point because you will start seeing many things differently.
Once you start understanding those things better, it will help you to figure out how did your primary family mold you and what made you the way you are now.
During this stage, you may even experience regression and feel your old life, habits, and behaviors as if they were someone else’s life because you will start having strong feelings about those things you used to accept.
This is the point when you will finally understand what is right and wrong in your life.
In addition, there are more intense emotional reactions towards your past experiences and relationships that were crucial in shaping who you are today and what you are like as a person today.
4) Experiencing breakthroughs
There are these moments during the spiritual awakening when you will feel like someone kicked you in the stomach and you simply cannot breathe.
These moments can be triggered by memories, smells, or anything else that can bring up strong emotions and trigger the old reactions in you.
Even though these feelings are quite unpleasant, they are good because they mean that something deep is changing in your mind, and you need to deal with it.
These kinds of moments can happen even while dreaming or be triggered by a dream.
It is a way your mind is telling you that you are ready to face the truth now and that you can handle whatever is waiting for you in the future.
During this stage, you may start questioning your thoughts and beliefs even more because you are changing your perception of the world around you, and it can seem like a paradox.
Be careful which ideas and topics you explore during these stages because some will bring up strong emotions for some people, which can bring about actual real physical reactions such as sweating, trembling, or nausea.
5) Feeling confused again
As soon as you start feeling better, it will hit you like a ton of bricks again, and you will feel like you are thrown into the deepest waters and fighting for the air.
Confusion is the natural part of it because you may start wondering whether it will ever end!
You may be tempted to go back to your old ways, only to realize that is not possible anymore.
You will soon come to an understanding that you have to make changes in your life and start making new decisions about your relationships and career.
It can be difficult to abandon your old ways and all the things that were making you miserable, but it’s worth fighting for those changes because they are important for the next stage of our growth.
Even though these stages are not written in stone, however, I very much wish I knew about them before my awakening because it would make it so much easier.
6) Integration
The good news is that once you come to this phase, you will be in a much better place. It is a calmer phase of the awakening, and it lasts for a while.
You will be able to express your feelings better, and all the changes that took place will seem normal to you now.
All the emotions, thoughts, beliefs, and ideas that caused so much turmoil during the process of awakening are now integrated into your mind because of their importance to who you are as a person.
You will begin to understand your path more, refine your personal purpose, and know why you are on this journey in the first place.
It is a time for creative work and personal growth, so make sure to have time for yourself and invest the time in your hobbies and personal projects because that’s where you will meet your true self.
This is the phase of the awakening when you finally get all the bad stuff out of your system, and you begin feeling really good.
In this phase, your goals and life purpose become clearer to you, and that’s why you are able to focus more on what’s important in your life.
It is a very creative phase, so enjoy all the exciting ideas that come to your mind because they will be very useful for what’s ahead.
7) Enlightenment
The final stage is enlightenment.
This is the closest to who you really are and where your life path is leading you.
It’s a mystical and mysterious state of mind, but you are ready for that, and there’s no turning back now.
During this period of your awakening, a lot of ideas will come to mind that you may not understand immediately.
It is just information that will help you see things in the most creative way possible.
It is important to stay open and listen to what’s coming from your higher self because you are required to make changes in your life at this point.
The only way you will be able to do that is by treating your higher self as if it were a person giving you direct instructions because they will help you reach your full potential in life.
You are ready for the next step, and there’s nothing standing in your way now.
What can you do to help yourself during the process?
Well, one thing that can truly help you go through it easier is to pamper yourself and give yourself the permission to make mistakes in life and tailor your days according to your needs.
I know it’s hard to do it at first, but it gets easier in time.
If you can see things this way, then all the stumbling blocks that can come during these stages are material for lessons that you are going to learn about yourself.
That learning process will be useful in the future, so be careful what ideas and topics you explore now.
If you feel that you could use some guidance to understand better the patterns of behavior you were repeating that led you to this point now, you can always consult a psychologist and make your path easier.
You don’t need to feel ashamed of it.
As someone who is going through the awakening process, I can tell you that it’s not easy at all, and sometimes it seems as if you are walking on thin ice, but in the end, you will be able to walk with more confidence and self-esteem.
Your journey will be really rewarding and useful for your personal development because this is where you can embrace your true self.
Don’t feel bad if you start feeling like you need more space and alone time. It is necessary so you can fully let go of all those old beliefs and ideas that will be released from your subconscious.
There are many things that can help the process, but as with anything else, it’s only going to be useful if you use them with purpose, don’t use it as a way to avoid personal responsibility for your life.
That would hurt you more than helping you.
It is important to remember that this process happens in many stages and that each one will bring a different experience.
It may feel like you are being washed by waves, and at times you may feel like you are drowning.
I’ve been there, and it is not a pleasant feeling at all.
However, keep in mind that you will be okay in time.
As much as you are able to experience the awakening, you will be able to handle it.
It is not a pleasant process, but it’s worth all the effort you put into it.
Final thoughts
Even though it may be extremely difficult to go through all of these phases, remember that it’s not impossible.
The only true limitation is your own mind.
Only your mind can determine how much you can change in a given period of time, but then again, as long as you are aware of these stages and stay open, you can always work towards achieving your goal.
Don’t leave any stone unturned in your subconsciousness because it is the only way to feel fresh and ready for the new, better stage in your life.
When it comes to your personal spiritual journey, which toxic habits have you unknowingly picked up?
Is it the need to be positive all the time? Is it a sense of superiority over those who lack spiritual awareness?
Even well-meaning gurus and experts can get it wrong.
The result?
You end up achieving the opposite of what you’re searching for. You do more to harm yourself than to heal.
You may even hurt those around you.
In this eye-opening video, the shaman Rudá Iandé explains how so many of us fall into the toxic spirituality trap. He himself went through a similar experience at the start of his journey.
But with over 30 years of experience in the spiritual field, Rudá now confronts and tackles popular toxic traits and habits.
As he mentions in the video, spirituality should be about empowering yourself. Not suppressing emotions, not judging others, but forming a pure connection with who you are at your core.
