7 stages of shamanic initiation

So you feel called to practice shamanism?

First, you need to understand the 7 stages of shamanic initiation.

Here is your step-by-step guide.

1) Focus on creating vibrant health

Maybe you realize you’re being called to practice shamanism because you’re a solitary individual who’s most at home when in nature, perhaps you’ve had mystical out-of-body experiences or maybe you’ve even felt a healing energy in your hands?

Does this sound like you?

These are all signs of the shamanic calling.

Whatever your reasons for following this path, becoming a shaman doesn’t happen overnight.

After taking note of a calling and undertaking training with a mentor, the shamanic initiation can begin.

The journey begins with creating vibrant health for yourself – in your body, mind and spirit.

You can’t help others heal if you’re not in true alignment yourself.

This should be your priority.

Take a look at your grounding practices – are you centered and calm? You can find grounding through various means.

  • Walk barefoot in nature
  • Block out time to meditate
  • Establish a breathwork practice

But I get it, starting new practices can be hard, especially if you’ve not done these things before.

If that’s the case, I highly recommend watching this free breathwork video, created by the shaman, Rudá Iandê.

Rudá isn’t another self-professed life coach. Through shamanism and his own life journey, he’s created a modern-day twist to ancient healing techniques.

The exercises in his invigorating video combine years of breathwork experience and ancient shamanic beliefs, designed to help you relax and check in with your body and soul.

After many years of suppressing my emotions, Rudá’s dynamic breathwork flow quite literally revived that connection.

And that’s what you need:

A spark to reconnect you with your feelings so that you can begin focusing on the most important relationship of all – the one you have with yourself.

As you become more grounded and commit to working on your path, you’ll start saving some much vital energy.

Instead of wasting energy on worrying, you’ll be able to direct this energy to yourself and filling up your ‘cup’.

This will allow you to focus on your mission.

2) Make way for a self-care practice

In addition to prioritizing grounding practices to help you redirect your energy to you, creating a vibrant body to live in, the second step of shamanic initiation is establishing a self-care practice.

We can always make an effort to improve our self-care, so start by asking yourself:

  • Am I sleeping enough?
  • Have I been creating space for myself to think?
  • How could I be kinder to myself?

These are the basics that you need to get right.

Making time to journal through your thoughts each day is also one of the easiest ways to bring in more self-care each day, as you reflect on thoughts swirling in your head and focus on getting clarity.

To help others on their healing journeys, you’ll want to make sure you’ve given your own healing and processing enough time.

This needs to be a daily practice: consistency is essential.

It’s also healthy to focus on positive self-talk as opposed to looking at the negatives, and it’s key you get real with yourself about the habits that don’t serve you.

A friend of mine once used the word ‘inappropriate’ to describe old habits – using this terminology will help you gain a new perspective on habits and to stick with kicking them to the curb.

Think of toxic habits as actually being inappropriate and you’ll think twice.

Make a list of the habits that don’t serve you. These could include:

  • Talking about other people negatively
  • Drinking alcohol frequently
  • Smoking cigarettes
  • Overeating on junk food

The best thing you can do is be really honest with yourself, and to look at why these habits are showing up and lingering.

In your self-care practice, you’ll also want to make way for positive affirmations. Focus on putting your energy behind what you do want in life, and really embody the feeling of having these things. How does it feel?

Simply put: you’ll find great empowerment in working with “I am” statements if you follow them with wonderful thoughts.

Try the follow to get started:

  • I am healing
  • I am empowered
  • I am in control of my life

As if that’s not enough, meditation and movement should be in your daily self-care plan for optimal wellbeing,

Carve out time to put your headphones in and relax with a podcast, head down to the beach and listen to the waves, or make time to move your body – whether that’s through ecstatic dance, yoga or running.

3) Connect with a supporting tribe of people

As you fully step into your power, you want to be surrounded by the right people.

These people should add value to your life and not bring any toxicity along for the ride.

Look closely (and honestly) about what the people in your life are contributing, and set boundaries if you feel like people aren’t supportive, caring or kind.

How? Well, you could ask for time and space from a person or a group of people, or decide to cut contact for good.

Remember to do what is right for you, and to not tolerate people just for the sake of having people around.

Whether it’s family, old or new friends, or romantic partners, look closely at what these people are bringing to your life and be ruthless.

It’s true: as you clear out the old and make space, it allows for the new.

This is a rule of the Universe.

As you progress through your shamanic initiation, call in your soul tribe. These people will support you and understand your mission; they’ll be with you all the way.

4) Step into your power

So, you’ve been prioritizing your daily rituals and self-care, and you’ve got rid of all of the toxicity in your life.

Good job.

You’ve got intentional and you’ve cleared space to allow for what really matters. It might feel strange at first as you adapt to your new routine and way of being, but stick with it.

Now: it’s time to claim your power.

It’s important you are your biggest supporter, and you have complete faith in yourself and your ability and decision making.

Remember the boundaries we spoke about earlier? I want you to remember that it’s alright to say ‘no’ and to tell people what you do want.

This is central to stepping into your power and being assertive.

As spiritual coach Megan Wagner explains:

“This is not power that dominates, but power centered in your heart so you can feel strong, confident and self-assured.”

5) Open your heart

When you’re living in alignment with your purpose and mission, things will naturally fall into place around you.

This step on the shamanic initiation is all about trust and manifesting.

Simply put: it’s not an accident that you’ve been drawn to this path.

Trust in your mission and live authentically in alignment with that. Once you do, life becomes effortless.

It reminds me of this Will Smith quote:

“Just decide; what’s it’s gonna be, who you’re gonna be and how you’re gonna do it, and then from that point, the universe will get out of your way.”

Set your intention in motion, and allow the right people, circumstances and opportunities to naturally gravitate to you.

Live from a place of abundance, not lack.

6) Release limiting beliefs

Limiting beliefs do nothing to benefit us – they just hold us stuck where we are and warp our reality.

Don’t let limiting beliefs hold you back from embodying your power, and that doesn’t do any good for you or others around you.

First things first, are you even aware of the limiting beliefs you hold?

As I’ve said earlier, it’s important to sit down with a journal and be honest to yourself.

Ask yourself: what are the beliefs that are holding me back?

In my experience, I can find myself thinking incredibly unhelpful, limiting and negative thoughts like:

  • I don’t know enough
  • I’m not qualified enough
  • I’m disillusioned
  • I’m not as good as I think I am

However, since understanding the importance of ditching limiting beliefs, I’ve been reframining these and not letting them dictate my reality.

After all, if you get to choose how you speak to yourself and how you programme your mind, why would you choose to fill it with negative rubbish that keeps you at a low vibration?

We want to be operating at a high vibration to attract all of life’s goodness to us.

I’ll give you an example about how to flip limiting beliefs on their heads. Instead of repeating negative statements, I’m instead affirming:

  • I know about a variety of topics and industries
  • I have worked hard to earn my qualifications and I love learning
  • I’m grounded and aware of my power
  • I’m talented and my work is appreciated

See how much better these sound? I feel better for writing these out!

Now: you try it.

7) Release your gifts to the world

I don’t know about you, but I personally don’t believe in accidents.

What do you think?

I think it’s no accident you’ve been drawn down this path and feel called to help others. It’s no accident that I’m writing this article and sharing these thoughts with you.

What’s next for you to do is to recognise your power and commit to sharing your gifts with others.

And the good news?

As you step into your power, you’ll shift into a state of flow and start attracting more goodness into your life.

As Megan Wagner says:

“As you express your life purpose and share your talents with the world, miracles will happen all around you and you’ll feel a part of the great flow of life.”
